and i cried yet again
72Today I casually switched on the television set when having lunch and there was this “feel good” movie on in which the weak oppressed good guy manages somehow to beat the system and put the bad guys behind bars as he delivers this homily about truth triumphing in the end anddddd I burst out crying.
All of last night I have been looking at this sight of huge waves sweeping through Japan taking with them debris of houses, cars, ships, aeroplanes and people in equal measure. All of this day I have all been hearing about the nuclear plant catching fire and seeing images of an entire city engulfed in flames and wondering awestruck about what would happen if there was a radiation leakage. YET, though these images did in my mind create horror and did make the brain want to reach out and touch the lives of all those people out there neither of them made me cry but the good guy beating up the bad guys in the end of that movie made me howl as if I had just lost a near and dear one.
I was so embarrassed I had to switch off the set and run away to the loo so that both my wife and daughter present around did not catch me at it and wonder whether I was stable. I cried for all those in the world that ever ever thought they could hold on to ideals, who expected truth to triumph and who were stupid enough to believe everything their mothers told them when they were kids. They are the ones who cheer when their country wins at cricket and football and think the bookies have no way of deciding the outcome, who get peace by being blessed by holy men who later get caught raping children and who once every five or six years dress up in their Sunday bests and go wild cheering in a new messiah who know they for sure will ensure that all just all their problems would now be solved. I cried for the ones whose mothers never told them about the great big bazaar where every single person has been brought out.
A deep despondency fills me today as I watch television, or read the papers, or even discuss current affairs with people around me. l normally try to avoid television and when the topics around me turn to what’s going on in the world I turn away or start talking of something else but just cannot get over reading the papers every morning and they are filled with news of who sold out to whom and how the ones who buy out others and use them for their ends are the ones that win regardless of who played. The news papers relentlessly scream out the triumph of the buyers and every morning I cringe at the feeling of being the perennial loser.
When cricketers go out to play, I cheer from the sidelines and stay up nights watching matches thinking it is my heroes that are performing for love and honour of our country, whereas it is the bookie who decides not only who will score how many runs but even who will bowl what kind of ball and when and despite the small fry being caught everyday this will never cease since the gang that runs the rackets from Dubai was created and nurtured by one of our own top leaders and is now beyond even his control.
When the commonwealth games were organised in India last year it was the politicians who got pride of place and bought toilet paper for $20 to $200 a roll and hired for a hundred thousand rupees machines that cost a fraction of that to buy. Sportsmen who actually had to run or fight with their hearts in their mouth had to be content with training facilities which would have cost as much as a roll of this toilet paper. As we cheered for God and country our respected leaders cheered for the Swiss banking system and the Duchy of Lichtenstein as the sports facilities so proudly built began their gradual decay.
Recently when a minister was dismissed after a prolonged hue and cry for causing a loss to the exchequer of almost Rs 2000000000000/- (which too after the intervention of the supreme court) his loss was admitted by the prime minister as having been the cost he paid for heading a coalition government!!!! In simple English he said “I knew he was robbing the country but I let him do it because otherwise I would not have been prime minister!”. And we hold him as an example of an honest politician. “After all he is personally honest”. we say, and neutrally move on with life.
And now when the trail has led to big fish who have the potential to dislodge the government, a deal has been struck whereby the party in power was granted more seats in the local election by the party supporting them ( a party with good local strength whose support is critical to the central government’s survival) and the heat has been turned off the politicians to whom there is a clear trail of dirty money because they are after all allies !!!! Just another scandal to be brushed under the carpet and just another nail in the coffin of the bought outs so that the buyers may sleep in peace. Let those without drinking water or schools or hospitals be dammed since they can be bribed with a bottle of liquor anyways before elections. Why provide schools and hospitals when this will do? 3G internet connectivity is after all more important and something from which more money can be made.
Yesterday the biggest tax offender in the country’s history, who owes taxes equal to the country’s entire health budget, was let off my some subordinate courts because the proof against him was not authentic. It was after all presented by an agency which till the other day had not arrested him though the fact about him was known for years. The arrest incidentally was when the Supreme Court ordered it and asked whether it was a tea party to which they were inviting him for which they had to wait for his approval. The opposition which was campaigning against the minister mentioned above was in power till a few years ago and speaks nothing about this case because they could then be asked if all these zillions he has stacked away were stacked only in the last few years and whether they had not been so stacked when they the opposition ruled. He couldn’t have sent money thrice the countries health budget abroad without the government’s knowledge!!! If he has, with their knowledge they deserve to be hanged and if he has ,without their coming to know they deserve to be shot dead for their naiveté. Yet, nothing will ever happen to them that buy as they run the system for the sake of the buyers.Hence the school less will remain illiterate, the hospital less shall continue to die on the streets and the water less shall die of thirst so that the few may ski on the slopes of the alps.
And this is what made me cry- the thought that the tsunami affected will ultimately salvage their lives , those that have lost houses will rebuild them, those that have lost friends children and spouses will learn to live without them or get new ones but this will go on forever - and there is no end in sight for those that do not even know that the market has bought them out and that the world exists purely for the pleasure of those that can pay and therefore, in remembrance of all the good guys in the world whose mothers fed them bloody lies as kids I shall continue to cry every time I see a film that shows the small man winning.

A very heartfelt hub, and one that will touch people on many levels.
God bless you! I danced all over your buttons sir! God bless your wonderful heart. I'm with you brother man! I cry for the blindness to which my country is blinded. Our justice system is the injustice system. We elect lawyers to the highest offices and they will not run a court system. But my country sleeps. And the world suffers largely from apathy. God bless your caring heart sir!
.
Brother Neelesh, in my opinion this is probably the best heartfelt Hub I have ever read. I take my hat off to you and wish you everything that is good.
The world is an unjust place where fairness and morality is but a prop used by the political actors we call leaders. Much like you, my friend, seeing the small guy win touches me more deeply than anything because it is so very rare that this ever happens. Disasters in this world are far more frequent than justice. Excellent and moving article from the heart of what I perceive to be a very kind soul.
This hub was reflection of how I feel. Thanks for giving words to my intangible thoughts! That shows how sensitive you are towards everything that happens around you and your perception of it. Let such sensitivity spread like a wild fire and buildup into a super-consciousness and start healing the deadly cancer of unending greed. Thanks for kindling this feeling in me Neelesh!
So you are a 'sad-movies-make-me-cry' type. :)
I used to be like this a long time ago but over the years my immune system, probably, grew stronger. I started absorbing crude stuff with relative ease. When I was younger I had a burning desire to gun down such ruthless people but now, like every commoner, I too have become indifferent and thick skinned. I guess I convinced myself long back that nothing's going to change in this materialistic & selfish world....so why waste time & energy on the world outside of you...better focus on your inner core. My policy...."face the world the way it is and if you can't, turn your face away." Needless to say I see myself in the latter category.
Keep up the good work.
Touchingly portrayed, Neelesh!
This is the sad state of affairs today, and unless every person resolves to bring about a positive change (honesty, truthfulness, sincerity) in himself first, and in a conscientious way, things will only get worse.
God Bless us all....
Great Hub. The problem is that people have been betrayed so often, that they have become numb and insensitive to whatever is happening around them. The sense of hopelessness is complete.
In the situation that you have so aptly described, it is very easy to get cynical like i have become, over the years. what with crony capitalism and "fixing" so nicely depicted by the radia tapes, we, the aam aadmi count for nothing at all.
actually, i dont know whether anyone has realised this - when you want to s**** people nicely, you just give them a fancy name - one gandhi created the harijans instead of integrating them and left them at the bottom and another gandhi coined aam aadmi and has left the mangoes to rot!
Neelesh ; The story of dishonesty ruling is there since time of Mahabharat and will continue BUT that doesn't make Bad as correct. 75-80% people in this world are like you and me too; we do our bit as and when we get the opportunity. if every one does his/her bit even just around him/herself that would make lot of change. such type of movies will have to continue doing the same thing just to remind good majority good people that at the end Good will be God.
I know that many change agents are not required ; the country needs at max 50 full Honest IPS and 50 Full Honest IAS officers who dont care where they are transfered. we also need in each state Modi like CM and Sardar Patel like Home Ministers.
All the evils will be wiped out.
Hey! Good one .. reflects the sentiments of many. The house of cards is collapsing; and every individual in their own way has to make a conscious choice to get involved to correct the equilibrium.
Lovely hub written straight from the heart. You probably have written what many of us feel too!
It is just so true.every time I come back from work in the back of beyond .touch base with &civil ization. I am amazed that all ive missed out on is scams murders and rapes.but mark my words neelesh the next decade wil recognize honest and comited writers. They hv no choice anymore! Hum dekhenge woh din ke jiska waada hai!
A beautiful and heart-felt article that has touched me. Thank you for putting into words what I often feel too. All the fine talk somehow doesn't count for a row of beans when one gets into the story behind it all. It is easy to become cynical, harder by far to hold onto a sense of decency.
Thanks again.
Love and peace
Tony
You are my kinda guy neeleshkulkarni! I care too. I could not stop watching the news - only hoping to hear that all was well. I am still waiting.
That is awesome - I am so glad we can learn from the power of 1 sometimes!
I do believe that all will be well in time, I just wish it could be sooner rather than later. We will wait together:-)
Beautifully expressed and yes, one can get emotionally distressed seeing so much of sorrow.
Voted up!
For a while I thought you were describing politics and corruption in my country the Philippines :) It's a worldwide endemic. Some just circumvent the law with more finesse.Like the "bread and circus" of ancient Rome these movies serve the same purpose. To keep the masses in a passive opiate induce trance while the country's elite decide who gets what.Once in a while when they take time off from counting their loot and find time to see a feel good movie they also cry. :( .....perhaps for the villain ? :))
every thing will be ok, you may not change the world you can change yourself, your thought and ideas
Plz post all the links on my wall!!
Beautiful hub my friend and you speak with such passion about this. We are living in a very corrupt world and something has to change. God Bless you:)
I am honored and blessed to know someone like you. You have a beautiful heart! I am touched by the hub you have written. Full of truth and brimming with compassion. Bless you, my friend ~ VC
Thank you for sharing your thoughts . God Bless You.
let the tears flow, healing and beautiful. thx for writing this, glad to see that people care as deeply as you do!
What depth of feeling and clarity. It is tear-rending to be so aware of the horrid injustice and then, even more, to see stories in which the tables are turned and the good guys win. Your writing is in a class by itself.
BEING good is winning. :-)
. . . you should know! :-)
Yup!!
Dear Neelesh,
You cry because you have a big heart and one that feels the pain of others..I cry too..sometimes for no reason..a feeling in the air..emotions stir the soul and cause us to pray, reflect, and sometimes act..Wonderful hub with much heart. Thank you.
Sunnie
Namaste my friend, yes this is the world we are living in...and DSK and the hotel maid are fighting a rape story or prostitution story in NYC, yes he was the president of IMF and always had a really disrespectful behavior toward women. Madoff got caught and jailed, Murdoch was all other the news and disappeared after hypocritically apologizing and is probably laughing at those who thought they could really bring him down...while the only willing witness died from a non suspect death as he was needed!!!
Who believes in all those lies? We disapprove but need to get being the good souls we are and sawing seeds of goodness untill the last day.
What is funy is the way the media control the public opinion is so clear that in korean drama I was watching the public relations just use them like toys to manipulate people like uppet and it works so well...
You may not realize it Nanaste, but a few simple words, so well said, as only you can...Can and does help to make the world we live in a better place. Thank you my friend for all your Charm, wisdom and humor.
I agree with your comment about how our courts allow offenders to go scot free citing lack of evidence. I feel it is their responsibility to deliver justice, and not just be a referee in a case of debating game.
Neeleshkukarmi, It is those like you my friend who are really in control of this world , you are conciencious ! Up until now ,even in America ,it has been the consciencious that hold back the tides of corruption , of greed , and of waste . Ultimately, even those who govern will have to be accountable to this ! We will stand vigilant ! We will hold those around us accountable and your kindness and conscience mind will win! The goodness that you teach your children , will win!.....:-}
I am all new to this site. Please check out my first hub and see if you're interested in following and sharing! Thank you!
Neeles, you are a kind and sensitive man who probably is too gentle for this world. This hub was a pleasure to read and I am honored to be your friend. I am sorry it took me so long to get over to your site to read; I won't be gone for long in the future. Excellent hub and a must read for anyone interested in compassion and empathy as human qualities.

It's an ill-divided World Neeleshkulkarni, but if everyone would do as you do - empathising with others, and exposing dishonesty - I believe we'd all enjoy a much better quality of life.
Up and useful BTW.
